Partnering with the music distributor can make or break your project, so it’s crucial to choose wisely. This month in the DIY Musician Blog, we will explore my personal favorites in the field that is full of options, but, unfortunately, not so much substance for independent musicians. But don’t worry, those few we have are really good. Each provides features and possibilities for different goals and approaches, so there is a match for everyone. It’s time to pick the best music distributor for your next release!
OFFstep
OFFstep is a newer player in the distribution game, offering a fresh, artist-first approach. With transparent contracts, fair revenue splits, and no hidden fees, it’s built for indie musicians who want a straightforward partner without the baggage of traditional industry practices. OFFstep doesn’t aim to be everything to everyone—they focus on supporting creators who care about owning their work and being treated as partners, not products. It’s a great choice for DIY artists who value creative control and want to work with a distributor that genuinely prioritizes their long-term success. For a fair annual fee, you'll get access to unlimited releases and incredible label-level distribution tools, including music videos and Vevo.
Key Feature: Distribution with a strong focus on artist-friendly revenue splits and transparent terms. Best For: Independent artists looking for fair deals and direct support from a distributor that prioritizes musicians' rights. Great for DIY artists who want control over their music.
CD Baby
CD Baby is one of the most well-known and established distributors out there, with a simple pay-per-release model that gives you lifetime distribution. For a one-time fee, your music is sent to all major platforms, and they also offer extras like sync licensing and publishing administration. It’s especially useful for artists who release music occasionally and don’t want to worry about annual fees. CD Baby works well for solo musicians or small bands who want reliable distribution without ongoing costs or complicated contracts.
Key Feature: A one-time fee per release, with wide platform reach and extras like sync licensing and publishing admin. Best For: Artists who release less frequently and want a straightforward, pay-once model without recurring fees. Ideal for solo artists or bands putting out albums once or twice a year.
ONErpm
ONErpm stands out by offering free distribution with the opportunity to grow into more advanced label services. It’s ideal for artists who are just starting to build momentum—if you begin to perform well on streaming platforms, ONErpm may offer you additional promotional or marketing support. This performance-based approach makes it a smart option for artists in niche or fast-growing genres who want to start free but keep the door open for label-style backing as they grow. To join this one, you need to have some tracking and buzz in your project, but it's one of the best options for growth.
Key Feature: Offers free distribution with the potential to access label-level services once you hit traction. Best For: Artists building momentum who want to start free and scale up with additional support. The best choice of invite-based distributors providing all-in-one support and features, including Publishing Administration, and a top pick if you’re establishing an independent record label.
Symphonic Distribution
Symphonic is a curated distributor that balances distribution with a range of professional services like playlist pitching, monetization tools, and marketing support. Unlike open platforms, Symphonic is selective, working with artists who have a bit of traction and are serious about their careers. It’s best suited for independent musicians, producers, and labels who are looking to scale up and need a team that offers more than just file delivery. If you're past the beginner stage and want to approach your releases more strategically, Symphonic might be the right fit.
Key Feature: A curated distributor that provides marketing and monetization tools alongside distribution. Best For: Artists with a bit of a track record who are ready to level up professionally. Great for producers or artists who already have a fan base and want to refine their business side.
AWAL
AWAL (Artists Without A Label) is known for offering label-level support to independent artists without asking them to give up ownership of their music. It’s not open to everyone—you’ll need to apply and have a solid streaming track record to be accepted—but if you’re in, you get access to marketing, sync licensing, and detailed analytics. AWAL is a great option for mid- to high-tier indie artists who are pulling in consistent streams and want a serious partner that can help them reach new levels without signing a traditional record deal.
Key Feature: A selective distributor offering label-level services without giving up ownership. Best For: Established indie artists with proven streams and fan engagement looking for high-level support. A good fit for someone streaming in the hundreds of thousands per month and seeking industry connections.
I find myself in the ONErpm camp with their main establishment as the best option for bigger projects and independent labels. And their offspring, OFFstep, is currently one of the best on the market for new artists, providing an incredible variety of tools at great terms. Remember, this list is more of a personal preference combined with an evaluation through various sources, so please, always do additional research for your unique situation.
I’ve had personal experience with every distributor listed except AWAL, and I heard some great things about it from a few friends in the industry who all agree it deserves more attention. There are a few distributors that left a bitter aftertaste. Let’s just say there is a reason why this list is relatively short. In any case, choosing the right distributor for your project is up to you. Compare different options, research deeply, evaluate terms of service (contracts), and make an educated decision that will help your career flourish.
Be well, stay tuned!
