When talking about tools, we typically think of gear and software. However, some unique tools matter even more and are available to any musician by default. In today’s DIY Musician Blog post, we’ll explore three of the most powerful tools you always have at your fingertips!
«It's not the gear, it's the ear» became my mantra when making music. I was surprised to learn that these words belong to photographer Ansel Adams, and I think they apply to all creatives. Of course, there’s a point when equipment influences the results, but you need to start with the core. The tools are defined by the person using them, and when it comes to music, your hearing is the foundation. No tech can replace it, because music is meant to be heard.
However, your ears and imagination can be trained. That’s when your taste in music plays a role. The music you love and listen to influences your ideas and shapes your musical style. Treat your playlist accordingly. Fill it with quality music that reflects what inspires you and what you aspire to create. Add something outside the familiar, and occasionally explore records that aren't so well-known. Discover fresh and experimental tunes from time to time. If you have a favorite musician, look up who they listen to and who inspires them. By intentionally expanding your musical influences, you can boost your creativity.
Even when combined and developed with the other two, your perspective remains just as important. It’s a multilayered word, and here I mean it in the broadest sense. It includes your memories, stories, feelings, imagination, approach to music making, and creative viewpoint. Bring all of yourself into your creations. It’s not the ideas themselves that are unique; it’s your perspective that makes art truly yours. There are thousands of love songs out there, but only you can share your story, experience, and feelings in your own distinct style. Your combination of all these elements will connect with a specific audience, and that connection is what makes us fall in love with music.
Take care of your superpowers and sharpen them. All other skills and tools will only improve what you already possess within these three. Nurture these abilities gently and thoughtfully, and you’ll build a truly fulfilling and lasting creative career while making music that will withstand the test of time and possibly inspire others.
Be well, stay tuned!
